LMS or Learning Management System is software provided for managing and tracking the training process. LMS may also include software for distributing the course material through online services and also for updating the online course materials. Most of the trainings taken in companies and organizations are through Learning Management System, these corporate buy the LMSs for tracking the registration of employees for the training programs and also for online courses. Usually the Learning Management Systems are web based to enable access to learning content and also for administration purpose. For compliance training also LMS system is used. In more advanced versions LMS also contains performance management systems. Performance management system is usually used for employee appraisals, skill analysis, and competency management and also for
assessments. Some organization may also require recruitment and reward functionality in the Learning Management System itself. This also is provided with certain versions of LMS. LMS can be based on different development platforms like java J2EE or Microsoft .NET and may also use a database in the back end. Most of the LMS systems are not open source and usually restrict access to the source code, though very few open source models exist. Most of the LMS systems are commercially well developed.
